Queensland wins House Rules 2017 with innovative design

It was exciting to see Queensland win the final of in the latest season House Rules last week. This is the second year in a row a Queensland team has won the popular reality TV show which is all about pimping property.

We love a good renovation and as all of the contestants are amateurs and the homes are mostly standard suburban dwellings, the show is actually a great source of inspiration. It can give you some good ideas of what can be achieved in your own home.

Six teams started out the competition with the goal of renovating six homes in six weeks. Each team is allocated a “zone” with house rules to interpret. In some cases the results were amazing, others not so much!

The winners not only end up with their house made over from top to bottom, the prize grand prize is $200 000.

In the Grand Final, Aaron and Daniella from the Gold Coast, were challenged with building a “bloke’s boho hangout”. As mind-boggling as that concept is, they managed to deliver with some great innovative design ideas. The space itself was a major challenge as it was an awkward narrow stretch down the side of the house.

Overcoming all the obstacles, they impressed the judges and the home owners with an indoor/outdoor cinema and bar area, seating nooks and a tool shed.

The judges praised them in particular for their use of greenery and multi-tiered decking platforms to break up the long narrow space. They also were impressed by the use of colour to tie the areas together, as well as design touches such as furnishings and lighting.

Our personal favourite aspect though has to be the bar. Made from recycled materials and featuring a tapped keg, how could you go past it?!  Located right next to the couch and drop down cinema screen, it’s such a great use of a tiny space.

If you didn’t watch the show and are planning on sprucing up your home, take a look through the House Rules gallery of photos.

There are some really good ideas for room layouts and design that might give you some inspiration.

And after Queensland showed we have what it takes in the renovating stakes, we topped off the week with an Origin win.

Go the Maroons!
